ICAR-CIFRI celebrated World Dolphin Day.

River dolphin is India's National Aquatic Animal. The populations are declining day by day due to various anthropogenic activities. Dolphin population is an indicator of riverine ecosystem health. The indiscriminant and illegal fishing has resulted in catching juvenile fishes and accidental/illegal catching of dolphins from inland waters. Persistent disturbance may cause long-term negative impacts such as stress related health issues and reduced reproductive success.

ICAR-CIFRI celebrated world Dolphin Day on 5th Oct 2020. On the occasion, a mass awareness program was conducted nearby at Daspara ghat and Nawabganj ghat of river Ganga where dolphins usually seen. The program was conduct by maintaining COVID guideline and the social distance. The virtual event witnessed by numbers of fishermen. On the program. Director ICAR-CIFRI Dr. B.K Das has elaborated the importance of National Aquatic animal and explained the way, how the fishers can contribute in conservation by their active participation and involvement. He also advised not to harm the national Aquatic animal and their habitat. During the program Gangetic Dolphins were sighted in the river.
