World Soil Day Celebration at ICAR-CIFRI
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore celebrated world soil day on 5th December 2016. The main aim of the Soil Day campaign was to create awareness regarding importance of soil in our lives. The theme of World Soil Day 2016was "Soils and pulses, a symbiosis for life". Shri. Madhusudan Ghosh, MLA, Noapara Constituency was the chief guest of the function. He shared his experiences of soil conservation and its importance in the life of rural people. He raised concern about the immense use of pesticides in agriculture. Dr. B.K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI spoke about the status of soil health and raised issues of soil sustainability. He explained that soil is the foundation of food system which provides nutrition to the people. Dr. V.R. Suresh, HOD REF Division outlined the importance of celebration of world soil day. Dr. S.K. Nag, Principal Scientist described the ecological significance of soil in natural ecological cycles of environment. Dr. Srikanta Samanta, Principal Scientist gave lecture on importance of soil health in agriculture. Dr. Ashok Chattopadhyay, Reliance Foundation, students from APC college, New Barrackpore, fish farmers from Kishanganj district, Bihar and in and around Barrackpore including the Scientists of CIFRI participated in the programme.
The programme ended with vote of thanks proposed by Dr. U.K.Sarkar, HoD, RWF division followed by national anthem.
