Empowering youth fishers of Begusarai, Bihar through knowledge strengthening at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore



A 7-days training programme for the fishers from Begusarai District, Bihar was inaugurated by Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI on 03 Jan, 2017 at ICAR-CIFRI Head Quarter, Barrackpore. A total of 28 fishers mostly youths including three tribal fishermen took part in the programme. Dr. Das, while inaugurating the program, stressed on the needs of knowledge strengthening for skill development of the farmers on various aspects of inland fisheries resource management to eradicate poverty and malnutrition in rural India ensuring their livelihood. The training module was framed after interacting with the farmers and the feedback received from the previous batches, which was being refined time to time. There are perennial and seasonal ponds, riverine systems, mauns & chaurs including canals of Gangetic origin at Begusarai, thus, there is an ample scope of livelihood improvement through development of inland fisheries in this district. ICAR-CIFRI is aiming at developing attitude of the farmers towards inland fisheries management by mitigating knowledge gap through training. The programme has been oriented to strengthen the practical skills of the farmers for enhancing the fish production in open waters including ponds & tanks, through on-field exposure visits and field demonstrations besides class room sessions. They were also exposed to ornamental fish market including hatcheries as to aware themselves in marketing ornamental fish species. During valedictory session, Dr. B. C. Jha, Former Head, RWF Division of ICAR-CIFRI urged the trainees to apply the knowledge gained during the program to their respective water bodies and share the findings to the neighbours also to enhance productivity of the eco-systems. Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Head, FREM Division interacted with the farmers and gave an overview of using small indigenous fish species for human health purpose. The training programme was well coordinated by Dr. A.K Das, I/C E & T Cell and Co-coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy and Mr. Mitesh H. Ramtake.
