Training to students of Vinoba Bhave University (VBU), Hazaribag and PKR (PG) College, Dhanbad inaugurated at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore
A 10-days training programme on Inland Fisheries Management for the final year M.Sc. Zoology (specialization in Fish & Fisheries) from PKR Memorial College (PG), Dhanbad has been inaugurated by Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI on 23 March, 2017 at ICAR-CIFRI Head Quarter, Barrackpore. A total of 25 students (50% tribal students) participated in this training programme. Dr. B.K Das, while welcoming the students during inaugural session, stressed on the importance of inland fisheries sector to ensure the life & livelihood of rural India with eradication of mal nutrition. He urged the students to build up their academic career in a modest way so that they could serve the sector in future fruitfully, as the demand for educated youths for this sector is increasing in the days to come. The training modules covered on-field exposure visits, field demonstrations and in-house class interactions with the scientists of ICAR-CIFRI. The interactive sessions involve orienting the students to the present aspects of inland open water fisheries resources, their production potential and problems faced by the local fishers. The students will also be engaged to submit write-up on different aspects of inland fisheries management through group activities. The support extended by CIFRI library is mention-worthy in this regard. The knowledge gap in regard to delineation of inland water bodies through GIS platform, taxonomy of fishes in inland open waters, limno-chemistry of sediment & water, ecology & fisheries of rivers & estuarine ecosystem, enhancement of fisheries in reservoirs and wetlands, pollutants in inland waters, fish diseases & their control in open waters, crafts & gear, climate change and its impact on inland fisheries, importance of SIFS as health food, feed formulation, socio-economic including marketing, would be reduced after completion of the training. Such training program would be of immense help in developing future road map for the students and fixing their target to be achieved in coming future through concerted effort & endeavour. Prior to that Director, CIFRI also distributed the certificates to the trainee students 30 in numbers (60% tribal students) from Vinoba Bhave University (VBU), Hazaribag, Jharkhand who successfully completed 8-days in-house dissertation training at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore during 15-22 March, 2017. While addressing the students of VBU, Hazaribag in the valedictory program, he expressed his concern to educate themselves in a more meaningful way with the utilization of prime time of youth for gaining more and more knowledge as to make themselves for future youth force of this important sector of inland open water fisheries.
