The International Workshop on Bioinformatics in Fisheries and Aquaculture, jointly organized by Inland Fisheries Society of India (IFSI) and ICAR-CIFRI for three days from 19th to 21st June 2017, was inaugurated at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore on 19th June 2017 as a part of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. The inauguration ceremony was attended by academics, researchers from India and abroad, leading entrepreneurs and bioinformatics experts from industry and CIFRI staff members. The inauguration ceremony started with the ICAR invocation song and followed by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Prof. Sam Martin, Professor, Fish Physiology, University of Aberdeen, UK; Prof. Alex Douglas, University of Aberdeen, UK and Dr. A. K. Roy, Former Principal Scientist & Head of Social Sciences, Coordinator, Bioinformatics Centre, ICAR-CIFA were the Guests of Honour in the inaugural function. Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Director-in-Charge and Coordinator of the Workshop welcomed all the dignitaries and participants and briefly highlighted the significance of the workshop in fisheries and aquaculture. Prof. Sam Martin expressed his happiness on being associated with this workshop of an important area and briefly described about recent advancements in the field of biology and bioinformatics in different sectors including fisheries. Prof. Alex Douglas expressed his desire to be always associated with such programmes in India due to its vibrant culture and warm hospitality. He opined that use of different tools of bioinformatics would unite researchers in fisheries sector across the world. Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Head, RWF Division of CIFRI, gave a brief information on the problems associated with use of Big data in fisheries sector. Dr. A. K. Roy delivered his inaugural lecture on "Trends in Computational Biology & Bioinformatics in the Eras of Big data Analysis", briefly described about bioinformatics, various tools and recent developments like cloud computing and grid computing. The innugural function was followed by technical session -1 with three presentations. "Bioinformatics in proteimics" (Dr. B. P. Mohanty); "Transcriptomics application in Fisheries and Aquaculture - Microarray and RNASeq" (Prof. Sam Martin); "Application of 'R' as a powerful tool in data analysis" (Prof. Alex Douglas). The workshop was attended by 27 partcipants from different universities including Vidyasagar University, West Bengal; Allahabad University, Uttar Pradesh; Burdwan University, West Bengal; WBUAFS, West Bengal; OUAT, Odisha; and scientists of ICAR-CIFRI.
