Workshop on "Assessment of water and soil quality parameters"

Last Updated on 15.08.2017

A 5-days workshop on "Assessment of water and soil quality parameters" has been inaugurated by Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI on 14 August, 2017 at ICAR-CIFRI Head Quarter, Barrackpore. A total of 21 candidates, including technical persons and research fellows of various externally funded projects both from head quarter and other regional centres/research stations of ICAR-CIFRI have taken part in the workshop. Dr. Das, while inaugurating the program, stressed on the need of training on basics of water and soil chemistry as sometimes it was found lacking in the scholars and the technical persons working in different laboratories. He told that now-a-days several commercial kits are available in the market and sometimes these kits do not give reproducible and reliable results. He emphasized on the role of CIFRI in monitoring those water testing kits for their accuracy in estimating quality parameters for farmers' benefit. He also stressed on the standardization and inclusion of methods suitable for covering different locations, both at micro and macro level, different sizes of water body and seasonal variations.

Dr. V. R. Suresh, Head, REF Division congratulated the convener and coordinators of the workshop and wished for the successful completion the workshop. Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Head, FREM Division told that presently the scientists should emphasize on the development/standardization of advanced and robust methods for the present day requirements like development of Soil Health Card and Pond Health Card, a novel initiative taken up by Dr. B.K. Das, Director, CIFRI. Dr. U.K. Sarkar, Head, RWF Division also emphasized on the need for the harmonization of the chemical analysis protocols to be followed by the technical persons and by the scholars. Dr. S. Samanta and Dr. S. K. Das, the two coordinators and all other scientists of the discipline of chemistry took this initiative to strengthen the backbone of chemical analysis in the institute.
