Meeting with tribal fishers at Sagar Island of Sunderban, West Bengal for possible livelihoods development under TSP

A meeting with tribal fishers was organized at Mansadeep of Sagar Island, Sunderban, West Bengal on 02-09-2017. Mr. Bankim Hazra, MLA, Sagar was the chief guest of the meeting. As per the earlier discussion of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and the MLA, two new tribal villages were to be adopted under TSP for possible fisheries based livelihoods development. The meeting was organized to make the tribal fishers aware about the TSP activities to be conducted by ICAR-CIFRI. Dr. P. K. Parida, Scientist and Nodal officer, TSP, ICAR-CIFRI given an idea about the TSP activities to be conducted in Sagar Island and requested for the cooperation of tribal fishers. Mr. Hazara, MLA requested the tribals to support whole heartedly and appreciated the work carried out by ICAR-CIFRI at Khansahebabbad–Khasramkar. He also emphasized upon the clearing of the weeds in the ponds and it may be done through NREGS programme of Govt. He made it clear that, for the livelihood development of the tribal fishers, the tribal fishers should obey the instruction and the suggestion of ICAR-CIFRI. Mr. C. N. Mukherjee, CTO explained the fishermen about the different activities undertaken by ICAR-CIFRI in Sagar islands and requested them to visit those places. The meeting was also attended by Mr. P. Balasar, Karmadhakya, Rudranagar GP, Local GP member (Mr. Nanda Jana), local school teacher, Mr. Haripada Maiti (Social worker) and Mr. Sukhadev Nath (Social worker) and 30 tribals of Mansadeep were attended the meeting. On 01-09-2017 ICAR-CIFRI team had a discussion with the tribals of Ganga Sagar for possible fisheries based livelihoods development.
