CIFRI initiated Canal Fisheries in Sundarbans under Tribal Sub Plan



Development of canal fisheries was initiated by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore under Tribal sub plan in Sundarban area at Kalitala Gram Panchayat, Hingalganj block, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Three canals having water area of 7 ha were stocked with 35000 fingerlings (of 80-100mm size) of three Indian major carp namely Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala. Water quality of the canals was properly monitored through regular water sampling by CIFRI. The tribal fishers of the area were provided with technical guidance for post stocking management of carp fingerlings under canal fisheries. Sixty tribal fishers family are beneficiaries of this development programme.


 


The carp fingerlings were released in presence of local Gram Panchayat Pradhan, Panchayat members, officials of forest department of Government of West Bengal. Dr. Arun Pandit, Principal scientist, Dr. Sanjay Bhowmik, Chief technical officer and Shri Subhedu Mandal,Technical officer coordinated the programme.
