Skill Development Training for Fish Farmers of Samastipur, Bihar

A skill development training program on "Inland Fisheries Management" was conducted for the fish farmers of Samastipur District of Bihar during 2-8 September, 2016 at Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata. The program was inaugurated by Dr. B.K. Das, Director, CIFRI on 2nd September, 2016. In his Inaugural address, Dr. Das, Director, CIFRI stressed on the need to increase fish production in Bihar, to help in enhancing livelihood security of the fishers. He requested the fish farmers to implement the skills they will develop during the training program at their farm/water bodies in Bihar. Dr. B.K Das also emphasized to strengthen the primary fishermen cooperative societies to develop fisheries on collective basis on vast Chaurs (approximately 5000 ha) in Samastipur district.


The skill development program curriculum was designed after need assessment of the fish farmers, and includes both theoretical as well as practical learning exercise. The fish farmers were exposed to various technologies viz. floodplain wetland fisheries management at Akaipur Beel; induced breeding and freshwater aquaculture at Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Regional Center, Kalyani. They were also exposed to Sewage based fisheries at East Kolkata wetland. A feedback session was also conducted and around 85% of the farmers expressed very high level of satisfaction from this skill development program.

Twenty eight fish farmers including two fisher women of six blocks of Samastipur district of Bihar participated in this skill development training program.
