Tribal Fish farmers of Purulia,West Bengal trained on Scientific Fish culture

Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore inaugurated 5days training programme on 'Livelihood improvement of tribal fish farmers through inland fisheries management' under Tribal Sub Plan for the tribal fish farmers from Purulia, West Bengal on 30th September, 2016. Total 27 fish farmers including 9 fisherwomen of Santhal community participated in the training programme from Rajakhanda Adibasi Manfi Fish Production Group, Kenda, Purulia. These farmers are involved in fishing in check dams, small dams or in ponds for their livelihoods and they are unaware about the scientific know-how of the fish production practices. Dr. B.K Das, Director, CIFRI gave an overview on 'inland fisheries management' during the inauguration programme and also emphasized that through Scientific fish culture fishermen can get better income .


Dr. V.R Suresh, Head REF Division and Dr. Uttam Sarkar, Head ,RWF Division also interacted with the farmers and their training need was identified with a structured format during the inauguration session. This five days training programme has been planned with class room sessions and hand on and field/exposure visit, to orient the farmers in inland fisheries management for developing the skills and knowledge of the tribal farmers for their livelihood improvement.
