The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) is a premier research institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), working in the field of inland fisheries and aquatic resource management.
India possesses diverse inland fisheries resources including rivers, reservoirs, floodplain wetlands, lakes, estuaries, coastal lagoons and other inland water bodies. These resources contribute significantly to fish production, food and nutritional security, employment and livelihoods.
ICAR-CIFRI conducts research for the sustainable development and management of inland fisheries resources while promoting conservation of aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem services.
The Institute also develops technologies, provides technical guidance and conducts training and capacity building programmes for fishers, farmers, fisheries professionals and other stakeholders.
Sustainable development of inland fisheries resources through scientific research, innovation, conservation and responsible management of aquatic ecosystems.
To generate scientific knowledge, develop appropriate technologies and provide technical support for sustainable inland fisheries development and improved livelihoods.
To undertake research on inland fisheries resources, aquatic ecosystems, fish production, conservation, fisheries management and livelihood enhancement.
Inland fisheries, reservoir fisheries, riverine fisheries, wetlands, fish health, aquatic biodiversity, fisheries management and socio-economic studies.
