ICAR-CIFRI ranched thirty thousand fishes in the river Ganga for conservation

For fish diversity conservation and restoration of fisheries in Ganga River about 30,000 (thirty thousand) fingerlings of Indian Major Carps (Catla, Rohu, and Mrigal) were released into the Ganga River at Sangam Nose, Prayagraj by Prayag Centre of ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute on 30th April 2026. A total of 455 kg of fingerlings, weighing between 10-20g each, were ranched in presence of Dr Santosh Kumar Shukla, Executive Secretary, NASI, Prayagraj. The program was attended by the officials from UP fisheries department, Ganga Task Force, Ganga Prahari, Ganga Vichar Manch, pilgrims, fishermen from nearby villages, fish traders, and local people living on the banks of Ganga.
A mass awareness programme was also organized at the ranching site under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (Phase-III) project. Dr. Dharm Nath Jha, Senior Scientist, briefed the audience about the river Ganga and Namami Gange programme. Dr. B. R. Chavan, Head of Prayagraj Centre of the institute highlighted significance of fisheries in livelihood and nutritional security. Dr Santosh Kumar Shukla, Chief guest of the occasion, while addressing the function, explained the importance of the river Ganga for human civilisation and called for keeping it clean. Shri Rajesh Sharma, Convenor, Ganga Vichar Manch, and National Mission for Clean Ganga participated in the program and administered oath to all to keep the Ganga clean. Other scientists of the institute viz. Dr. Absar Alam, Dr. Venkatesh R. Thakur, Dr Vikas Kumar and Dr Jeetendra Kumar also expressed their views. Dr. Venkatesh R Thakur, Senior Scientist, while expressing his vote of thanks, assured for successfully achieving the objectives of this project. Other Scientists, officers, research scholars, etc. participated in the program and addressed the gathering.
