ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with NFDB-NERC, Guwahati organized a Webinar on ‘Climate-Resilient Fisheries and Aquaculture for Sustainable Development’
3rd July, 2026
Guwahati, Assam.
The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati, in collaboration with the National Fisheries Development Board – North East Regional Centre (NFDB-NERC), Guwahati, successfully organized a webinar on "Climate Resilient Fisheries and Aquaculture for Sustainable Development" on 3 July 2026. The programme was conducted as an e-extension initiative to disseminate climate-resilient technologies and management practices among fish farmers, fisheries professionals, extension personnel, researchers, and other stakeholders from across North-East India.
The webinar commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Ashim Kumar Borah, Senior Executive (Technical) and Officer-in-Charge, NFDB-NERC, Guwahati. Dr. Sullip Kumar Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati, delivered the keynote address and emphasized the increasing need for adopting climate-resilient approaches to ensure sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the face of changing climatic conditions. He highlighted the institute's commitment towards disseminating adaptive technologies for enhancing the resilience of inland fisheries and aquaculture systems.

The first technical lecture, "Management measures for fisheries and aquaculture during peak summer," was delivered by Mr. Ashim Kumar Borah, Senior Executive (Technical) and Officer-in-Charge, NFDB-NERC, Guwahati. The lecture focused on practical strategies for minimizing heat stress in cultured fish, maintaining water quality, optimizing feeding practices, and implementing precautionary measures to reduce production losses during extreme summer conditions.
The second technical lecture on "Climate change and its impact on inland fisheries" was delivered by Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati. The presentation highlighted the impact of climate change on inland fisheries and scientifically validated management interventions for enhancing the resilience of freshwater ecosystems, including habitat restoration, sustainable fisheries management, community participation, and adaptive strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate variability on inland waters.

An interactive discussion session followed the technical presentations, during which participants actively engaged with the experts on various issues related to climate adaptation, sustainable aquaculture practices, and management of inland fisheries resources. During the interaction, in response to queries raised by fish farmers on oxygen depletion during summer, Dr. Simanku Borah stated that bottom organic load is a major cause of oxygen depletion in fish culture systems which cause recurring algal blooms. He suggested removal of organic sludge at regular intervals which can help to mitigate the issue of oxygen depletion to a great extent. A total of 101 participants, including fish farmers, students, fisheries officials of North-Eastern states, attended the webinar.
The Director of Fisheries, Arunachal Pradesh, who was present online, expressed his pleasure for conducting the webinar on a very important topic and expressed his satisfaction on the efforts of CIFRI and NFDB in bringing about awareness among the fish farmers on management practices to be adopted in aquaculture ponds during summer. He requested CIFRI and NFDB to prepare an instruction material in this regard, which will be subsequently translated to regional/ vernacular languages by respective Fisheries Departments of NE states for the benefit of fish farmers. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. A. K. Yadav, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati.
The webinar was organized under the guidance of Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, who served as the Convener, and Dr. Sullip Kumar Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati, who served as the Co-Convener. The event was coordinated and moderated by Dr. A. K. Yadav and Dr. Simanku Borah, Senior Scientists, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati, as Organizing Secretaries.
The programme reinforced ICAR-CIFRI's and NFDB’s commitment to strengthening climate resilience in inland fisheries and aquaculture through knowledge dissemination, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative extension initiatives, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the fisheries sector in North-East India.
