The ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), in collaboration with SasyaShyamala Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sonarpur, organized a one-day awareness programme on scientific fish farming along with fisheries input distribution for fish farmers. The programme aimed to promote improved aquaculture practices and enhance the productivity and livelihood opportunities of fish-farming communities. The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. A total of 100 fish farmers benefited out of the programme from four villages of Kheyadaha panchayat and, with women constituting approximately 35% of the beneficiaries, reflecting the active participation of women in fisheries and aquaculture-based livelihood activities. As part of the input support, each beneficiary was provided with one 34-kg bag of fish feed and 7 kg of advanced Indian Major Carp (IMC) fingerlings for stocking in their ponds.
During the awareness programme, Dr.PranayaParida, SCSP Nodal Officer, ICAR-CIFRI, explained the importance of adopting scientific approaches to fish farming for achieving higher production and better economic returns. He highlighted key aspects including proper pond preparation, selection of quality fish seed, appropriate stocking density, balanced feeding, regular monitoring of fish growth and water quality, fish health management and timely harvesting. He emphasized that scientific management and efficient utilization of farm inputs can significantly improve fish production and reduce avoidable losses.
Dr.Swagat Ghosh, Head, SasyaShyamala KVKalso interacted with the farmers and discussed practical issues related to pond management, feeding practices, fish growth and disease prevention. Farmers were encouraged to maintain proper records of seed stocking, feed utilization, fish growth and harvesting to assess the productivity and economic benefits of scientific fish culture.
