ICAR-CIFRI organised Fish Ranching Programme in river Ganga towards biodiversity conservation under
Sustainable Development Programme.

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barackpore in association with NTPC, Farakka, Farakka Barrage Authority (FBA), Ministry of JalShakti and CISF, Farakka organised Fish Ranching Programme towards indigenous fish improvement and biodiversity conservation under the Sustainable Development in river Ganga at Farakka.
The programme was graced by several dignitaries and senior officials from NTPC and FBA, including Mr. Debabrata Kar, ED & Head of Project (HoP), Dr. Itwari Ram Lahri, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Mr. Philips Thomas, AGM, TS, Mr. Sanjeet Kumar Samal, DGM, HR, Mr. Nagarjuna Gunti, AGM, EMG, representing from NTPC Farakka, Mr. Ramjeet Verma, Superintending Engineer, representing from Farakka Barrage Authority and S.R. Jilowa, Assistant Commandant (AC), representing from CISF, Farakka Barrage.
During the programme, Dr. A.K.Sahoo Principal Scientist welcomed the delegates and briefed on the importance of ranching and breeding and seed production of the indigenous Gangetic fish species. All the delegates visited to the hatchery facility. Dr. Sahoo explained the operational procedure of the FRP carp hatchery and production of fish fingerlings. During the programme, 30,000 fingerlings of Indian Major Carp (IMC) fingerlings were ranched.
The participation of senior officials from NTPC, Farakka Barrage Authority and CISF reflected the collective commitment towards conservation and sustainable management of the fisheries resources of the River Ganga towards achieving goals of Sustainable Development Programme. All the delegates representing from FBA, NTPC and CISF expressed their commitment for support towards such programmes in future under the Biodiversity Conservation Plan. In addition, more than 20 active fishermen dependent on fishing in river Ganga were participated in the programme.
