ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore contributes Rs. 5.0 lakh to CM Relief Find for Amfan Disaster

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore is a premiere research Institute endeavouring in inland open water fisheries research, extension and training supporting live and livelihood of vast array of people across India. Established in 1947, the Institute has developed number of epoch making technologies boosting rural economy and disseminated the knowledge to the fisher folk working in this vast sector. In its 74 years long journey, the Institute took strong initiatives and shown solidarity towards supporting disaster management in fisheries sector whether it was Aila in Sundarbans, 25th May 2009, Fani in Bhubaneswar & Puri, Odisha, 4th May 2019, or Bulbul in Fresergunj, West Bengal 7th November 2019. The same is true in case of Amfan - the super cyclone, West Bengal, 20th May 2020 where the Institute and the team CIFRI took number of initiatives in supporting disastrous areas of Sundarbans, Gangasagar and Fresergunj especially in rebuilding canal fisheries as well as devastated ponds in tribal belt of Gangasagar & Fresergunj areas. Dr. B. K. Das, Director of the Institute has handed over a cheque of Rs. 5.0 lakh to the CM’s Relief Fund, West Bengal as a token of gesture contributing one day salary of the scientists and other staff members of the Institute today at Nabanna. Dr. Das also discussed with Shri Pradip Mazumdar, Advisor (Agriculture & Allied Sectors) to the Hon’ble CM, Govt. West Bengal about future plan of work in reshaping fisheries sector of West Bengal with technological backstopping by the Institute working at tandem with the line Department with special emphasis on wetland fisheries development in cluster mode, big fishery in closed wetlands besides imbibing rural youths including college students as to adopt fishery as a means of livelihood in future. ICAR-CIFRI will extend all plausible support to the DoF, West Bengal in rejuvenating economic growth of fisheries arena, a very potential sector of the State in future also, Dr Das re-assured.
