The Kochi Research Station of ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) organized a two-day training programme on ‘Inland Fisheries Development for Sustainable Livelihood’ for farmers of Elappully, Palakkad district, Kerala, under the STC programme from 06-07 January 2026.
The training aimed at enhancing the skills and technical knowledge of farmers in scientific and sustainable inland fisheries practices, thereby contributing to improved livelihood opportunities. There were 47 participants, comprising 11 women and 36 men.
The training programme was inaugurated by Smt. Saritha Vijayan, Assistant Director, Department of Fisheries, Palakkad, Kerala, who emphasized the importance of adopting scientific approaches in inland fisheries for sustainable income generation. The inaugural session was graced by the presence of Mr. Pudussery Sreenivasan, Director, Sarvodaya Gandhi Ashramam, Elappully.
The technical sessions covered key aspects of inland fisheries development, including pond culture practices, water quality management, biology of cultivable fish species, feed and fish health management. Dr. Vikas P.A., Senior Scientist, ICAR-CMFRI handled the session on cage culture, and Dr. Rejula K., Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFT delivered a session on entrepreneurship opportunities and scope of FFPOs. Mrs. Jomol C. Baby, Dept. of Fisheries, Palakkad, explained the financial assistance schemes given by the department and also provided an overview of fish hatchery management.
The training programme was well received by the participants, who actively engaged in discussions and expressed appreciation for the relevance and applicability of the programme.
Under the overall guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, the training was successfully organized by Dr. Deepa Sudheesan (Senior Scientist), Dr. Thankam Theresa Paul (Senior Scientist), Mrs. Tanuja Abdulla (Scientist) and assisted by Mr. P. V. Shajil (Technician).
