Project Title : Stock characterization, captive breeding, seed production and culture of hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha)

The project is operated in a consortium mode with the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore as Lead Center along with other five ICAR Fisheries Science Institutes (NBFGR, CIFE, CIFA, CIBA, CMFRI) and one University (Viswa Bharati University).

The project aims to unravel the dynamics of natural populations of hilsa, its ecology, biology, stock characters, genetic structure, physiology, reproduction and artificial propagation and culture along with feed development. Achievement of the objectives, besides adding to the scientific knowledge about the fish, would help develop technologies for aquaculture and conservation of its natural stock.
