ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore conducted vertual training programme on “Production enhancement through cage culture in Inland open waters” on 18 th February 2021

Cage culture in Inland open waters has been recently realised as an important farming system in addition to the pond aquaculture, for achieving the fish production target under Hon’ble Prime Minister’s launching programme on PMMSY, in India. Though, India has vast Inland open water resources including 3.5 m ha of reservoirs, most of these resources remained unutilised. Realizing the importance, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore conducted a vertual training programme on “Production enhancement through cage culture in Inland open waters” today on 18 th February 2021. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. B.K.Das, Director. Dr. Das explained on the cage culture activities of the Institute since last five years particularly on the commercialisation of CIFRI-GI Cage, and CIFRI Cagegrow and experience of CIFRI’s scientific interventions in cage culture of different states. Dr. Das also highlighted the importance of circular cages installed in Hirakud reservoir and the fish production. Dr. Das urged all the farmers, entrepreneurs and the Government officials to take up the cage culture on large scale. Dr. S. Samanta and Dr. B.K.Behera, Heads of the Riverine & Estuarine Division and Aquatic Environment Biotechnology and Nanotechnology Divisions briefed on the advantages of the cage culture and the environmental consequences. Three lectures on i) Genesis of Cage culture and CIFRI’s contribution towards cage culture in Inland open waters by Dr. A.K. Das, Principal Scientist ii) Fish feed and feeding management in cage culture by D.K. Meena, Scientist iii) An overview on fish health management in cage culture of Inland open waters by Dr. A.K.Sahoo, Sr. Scientist iv) An overview on PMMSY’ by Dr. P. K. Parida, Scientist. The programme was attended by 82 personnel representing from Fisheries Department, Farmers and Entrepreneurs. During the interaction, participants showed interest on the Fish feed development and nutrition and overall fish health management. The programme was coordinated by Dr. A.K.Sahoo and the team (Drs. S. K.Sahu, P.K.Parida, D.K.Meena, H. S. Swain and Mitesh Ramtke) under the overall guidance of Dr. B.K.Das, Director.
