ICAR-CIFRI organized online Training Programme on “Production enhancement through pen culture in inland open waters” at Guwahati on 19 February, 2021

An online training programme on “Production enhancement through pen culture in inland open waters’ was organized by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati on 19.02.2021. The aim of the virtual training programme was to sensitize the wetland fishers and lessees of beels about pen culture technology to improve their income and livelihood. Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Centre, Guwahati welcomed the officials of Assam Fisheries Development Corporation (AFDC) Ltd., Guwahati and all the trainee participants for the inaugural session through online mode. Dr. Bhattacharjya stated that the present online training was organized to enhance the technical knowledge of beelfishers and lessees. He informed that collaborative pen culture demonstrations using CIFRI HDPE pens have been initiated in 20 beels under the AFDC Ltd. under the guidance of Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries Science), ICAR, New Delhi and the dynamic leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore. ICAR-CIFRI has developed and disseminated guidelines and technologies for beel fisheries development since the 90’s. In his presidential address, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore addressed the participants virtually and briefed about the different ongoing enclosure culture activities of the Institute in Northeast region with special emphasis of Assam. He also encouraged the participants to adopt the technologies in a sustainable manner and also expressed happiness that the ICAR-CIFRI and AFDC Ltd. have been working in close collaboration for improving income and livelihoods of beel fishers of Assam. A total of 60 participants took active part in the technical session of the training programme and interaction that followed. In the technical session, Dr. Bhattacharjya explained about design, construction and installation of pens in beels in local language. Dr. Pronob Das, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati elaborated on Pre and post stocking management in Pen culture. Management of fish feed and health in pen culture was highlighted by Dr. S.C.S Das, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati. Mr. A. Borah, I/c, NFDB Regional Centre, Guwahati explained about different schemes under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for beel fisheries. Interactive session was conducted by Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head; Dr. S. Yengkokpam, Dr. D. Debnath, Mr. A. K. Yadav, Dr. P. Das, Mr. S. Borah, Dr. N. S. Singh, Scientists; Mr. B. C. Ray, TO; Mr. A. Kakati, STA of ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati. Mr. J. Nath, YP-II and Mr. S. Saikia, TA of ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati also took part by helping the organizer and participants during online interaction.
