Social wellbeing and livelihood support for SC fishers of Sahebkhali and Amtali of Sunderban

ICAR-CIFRI has been consistently working in Sundarbans area for up-scaling of the socio-economic condition of the Scheduled Caste community through the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) programme. Under this initiative, ICAR-CIFRI has organized two awareness cum input distribution programme for cyclone YAAS affected people of the Sahebkhali and Amtali area of Sundarbans during 25th and 26th November 2021. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, addressed 150 SC fish farmers of Sahebkhali on 25th and 250 SC fishers in Amtali on 26th and mentioned about the scope and importance of fisheries for livelihood development in rural areas. Dr. Das distributed 4000 kg lime, 42000 kg feed, 2200kg fish seed and 80 liters of fish medicine by following all COVID 19 related protocols. Dr. U. K Sarkar, HoD, RWF Division also addressed the fishers and emphasized on sustainable fisheries management. Canals are the major source of freshwater in Sunderban area and also a potential source for fish production. Majority of the canals are not being utilized for sustainable fish production. Dr. Das sensitized the fishers in the two GPs about the proper utilization of canals for fisheries production through community participation. He emphasized on community participation as the canals are more than 1.0 km long and the fisheries can be developed in these resources without the cooperation of community. Out of the total fish seeds distributed, 200 kg fish seed was released in two canals for the sustainable canal fisheries development. The programme was organized in collaboration with Sundarban Dreams for local support and coordination. The programme was coordinated by Dr. P.K. Parida, Mr. M. H. Ramteke and supported by Ms. Sadrupa Bhowmick and Ms. Shreya Bhattacharya, Mr. Sujit Choudhury and Mr. Manbendra Roy.
