‘World Soil Day-2021’was celebrated fervently by ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore on 5th December 2021 both online and offline highlighting the importance of soil health towards sustaining agricultural production and environmental health. Prof. Pabitra Mani, an eminent soil scientist and HoD, Deptt. of Agricultural Chemistry & Soil Science, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, (BCKV), Mohanpur, Nadia, West Bengal gracing the occasion as the as Chief Guest.
In December 2013, the UN General Assembly designated 5th December, 2014 as the World Soil Day. The 5th December being celebrated as World Soil Day corresponds with the official birthday of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand, who officially sanctioned the event. The Global Soil Partnership dedicated World Soil Day-2021 to the theme "Halt Sail Salinization, Boosting soil productivity". More than 100 participants comprising Scientists, technical staff, DoF officials, students, Research scholars, farmers, enterpreneurs across India took part in this auspicious program. The programme was enriched with the deliberation of Prof. Mani on Soil health restoration in coastal saline area to enhance crop and water productivity, which is befitting to the theme declared for this year and subsequently the deliberation was made more lively through the interactions with the farmers, students and scientists in resolving issues raised out of the coastal soil problems in regard to agricultural production system. Dr. B.K Das, Director, CIFRI in his inaugural address emphasized on the maintenance of soil health towards achieving the target of doubling farmer’s income by 2022 onwards. The agricultural chemists and soil scientists should pay more attention in maintaining eco-health of soil for food security to the nation-he urged. ICAR-CIFRI is looking forward to make the program a grand success with a note on providing Soil Health Cards of inland open water systems in coming days as to derive more productivity through enhanced fisheries from such ecosystems.
