Awareness programme on “Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) and Fish health management” in Charan beel, Assam

An awareness programme on “Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) and Fish health management” under the project “MEAN: Measuring Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and Aquatic Diagnostics through bio-sensory networkwith a special reference to North East India” was jointly organized on by ICAR- CIFRI, Barrackpore, ICAR- CIFRI, RC, Guwahati and C-DAC, Kolkata at Charan beel, Morigaon, Assam on 23-12-2021. The project is funded by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Govt. of India. The programme was attended by 60 fishers of theCharan beel in collaboration with Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd., (AFDC), Guwahati. Dr. S. C. S. Das, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati informed the fishers regarding the toxic effect of EDCs and the importance of the project for the sustainable beel fisheries development. Dr. S. Mukherjee, Project Engineer, C-DAC, Kolkata described the importance of Bio-Sensing systemsfor detection of EDCs in Aquatic Ecosystem for sustainable aquatic environmental management. On this program Dr. P. K. Parida, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpre emphasized upon importance of pen culture for in-situ raising of fish seeds as the stocking material in the beel and also informed about the responsible use of antibiotics for fish disease management. Dr. DhrubaJyoti Sarkar, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackporehighlightedon the importance of point of care biosensing systems for pollutant detection in beels and briefed about aspects of water quality parameters to getmaximizedfish production form the inland waterbodies. Sri J. P. Saikia, JE, AFDC,also emphasized on the importance of water resources and their best management practices for the overall beel fisheries development. The programme was supported by AFDC Ltd. staff members for successful organizing the awareness programme. Biosensor developed for detection of EDCs under the project were demonstrated on-field byShri K. Ghosh, Shri S.Bhattacharjee, Shri R. Banerjee, Mr.Kaushik Das,Research Scholars of MEAN project. The overall programme was coordinated by Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head, RC, ICAR-CIFRI, Guwahati and Dr. B. K. Behera, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore under the guidance of Dr. B. K.
