Capacity building programme for Tribal Fishers of Chhattisgarh

Centrally located, Chhattisgarh state is a tribal-dominated state and 30% of its population is tribal. ICAR-CIFRI has taken initiatives to uplift the socio-economic status of the primitive tribal populace of Chhattisgarh by joining the hands with Department of Fisheries, Chhattisgarh.As part of this mission mode livelihood improvement programme, a capacity building program on “Production Enhancement in small reservoirs through pen culture” has been organized in ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore during 24th – 27th May 2022. In this program a total of 29 participants including the Fisheries inspectors, and PFSC members of selected reservoirs have participated.
The enhancement of fish production by adopting the pen culture methodology has been started in 10 reservoirs viz Taurenga, Bahera Khar, Sutia Path, Matiamoti dam, Koserteda, Rabo, Ghunghutta, Gej, Kesavanala, and Parolkat of Chhattisgarh. CIFRI has provided twenty numbers of HDPE pens, ten boats with engines, twenty coracles, and twenty tonnes of CIFRI Cage Grow feed to the PFSC members of the reservoirs and the installation of the pens has been completed. The capacity building program has been organized for the farmers on pen culture technology. During this 4-day long training program, they interacted with Dr. B K Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, and other scientists on scientific fish farming fish production enhancement in small reservoirs. Dr. Das has told them about the in situ raising of the fish seed through pen culture for enhancing the fish production in reservoirs and also advised them to adopt the Grass carp model in aquatic weed chocked reservoirs. The trainees were taught different aspects of pen culture such as site selection, water quality management, feeding management in pens, disease management in cultured species, and overall small reservoir management.

A live demonstration on pen culture has been arranged in Khalsi wetland, Haringhata, Nadia, West Bengal for them on 26th May 2022. The fish farmers of Kholsi had interacted and shared their experiences with the farmers of Chhattisgarh. The programme ended with a valedictory session on 27th May. The program was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy, Sr. Scientist; Ms. Prajna Ritambhara Swain, Scientist; Sri Satish Koushlesh, Scientist; Dr. Avishek Saha and Sri Kausik Mandal, TA with great energy and efficiency.
