ICAR-CIFRI initiated livelihood improvement program for tribal women of Malda District in collaboration with ICAR-CISH KVK, Malda

ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore has taken a new initiative of to upscale the socio-economics of tribal women under Scheduled Tribe Component at 8 villages under Habibpur Gram Panchayet of Malda District, West Bengal in collaboration with CISH-KVK, Malda on 21st October, 2022. A total of 150 tribal women were selected for livelihood improvement programme out of which 120 were backyard pond culture intervention and 30 were for ornamental farming as a livelihood option to boost their household economy and security. These women group was formed a FPO to boost up their economy.

The initiative was started a year back with on-campus training programme at ICAR-CIFRI,Barrackpore campus. Fifty tribal women were trained to develop their skill on inland fisheries management and were motivated to initiate small-scale inland fisheries in their rainfed household ponds as an alternative livelihood strategy. To fulfill the objective Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI distributed 12.6 tonnes fish feed, 360 kg fish seed and 2.4 tonnes lime to 120 tribal women to support their livelihood through pisciculture in their household ponds. Dr. B. K. Das inaugurated a mass awareness programme at Habibpur Gram Panchayat office and also addressed the tribal women.

He stressed upon various aspects of inland fisheries and its avenue to boost the rural economy and also thrust upon the role of inland fisheries in nutritional security. Dr. Das also distributed the ornamental tanks to the 30 selected tribal women beneficiaries. Few ponds were also released fish fingerlings in front of tribal women. A demonstration and video show was carried out in front of the beneficiaries.
Dr. A. K. Sahoo, Sr. Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI and Dr. Dipak Nayek, Sr. Scientist, CISH-KVK accompanied Dr. B.K Das in this endeavor. Dr. Shreya Bhattacharya, RA, ICAR-CIFRI coordinated the programme and also mobilize the women tribal force to adopt inland fisheries management as an alternative source of their livelihood. The programme was successfully conducted at the remote place with active participation of the tribal populace.
