Training programme on “Advanced Methodological approach on Benthos in the Inland Open Waters”

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore has organized a three days training programme on “Advanced Methodological approach on Benthos in the Inland Open Waters” from 27 to 29 December 2022 at Barrackpore under the able guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. A total of 18 participants including 11 female and 7 male candidates of various capacities like students and research scholars from West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu have been participated.

This hands-on training program was basically organized to impart the methodologies used for the collection, sorting and identification of various benthic organisms of open water bodies. Dr. B K Das inaugurated the programme and interacted with the trainees about the role of benthos in our ecosystem and the necessity to study the benthic community. He has also advised them, to acquire adequate knowledge from this training programme and utilize the knowledge in their future career. During the three days training program, resources persons of various prestigious institutes like the Zoological Survey of India, St. Albert College, Kochi, Cochin University of Science and Technology and CIFRI have taught about different methodologies of collection, morpho taxonomy and enumeration of macrobenthos and meiobenthos.

Besides, a special lecture was arranged on a multivariate approach for studying the biodiversity of the benthic community. Regular practical classes along with a practical session on the collection of benthos from the nearby Hooghly River were conducted for the trainees. This training programme was coordinated by Dr. Pranay Kumar Parida, Mr. Pranab Gogoi, Ms. T. Nirupada Chanu and Mrs. Prajna Ritambhara Swain.
