ICAR-CIFRI imparted training to improve knowledge and capacity of Farmers from Katihar, Bihar at Barrackpore

A 7-days training program was organized at ICAR-CIFRI during 18-24 April, 2023 for the farmers of Katihar, Bihar on Inland Fisheries Management to impart capacity building through knowledge up-scaling in regard to fisheries and aquaculture. As Katihar is bestowed with ample inland fisheries resources including pond systems, the skill up-gradation of the fish farmers of this district is the need of the hour and the training program has been put forth to address these issues. Inaugurating the program, Dr. B. K. Das, Director of the Institute, urged the farmers to utilize the training periods at the Institute in shaping their skills and attitudes towards optimizing the fish yields form their resources in earning additional livelihood besides strengthening rural health with animal protein supply in the form of fish. Thirty farmers belonging to different blocks of Katihar participated in the training program.

They were exposed to in-house hands on training to ornamental fish culture, biofloc unit, RAS, fish feed preparation, water quality analysis, identification of biotic organisms including benthos, fish disease identification, cage and pen culture units visit besides theoretical class lectures on pond management, soil and water quality management, breeding and hatchery management, composite fish culture technique and culture of ornamental fishes. They were also exposed to field visit to ICAR-CIFA, Kalyani centre, progressive hatchery at Kalna, East Burdwan, East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), ornamental fish markets, etc for gaining firsthand knowledge as to enhance their skills through such exposure visits. Farmers have expressed their satisfaction over such exposures and the overall designing and executing the training in a hand holding manner with the basic components covering technical and socio-economic aspects of inland fisheries management and fish farming. In his valedictory remarks, the Director has invoked the farmers to apply the knowledge acquired during this training program for sustainable use of their inland fisheries resources.

The training program was coordinated by Dr. A K. Das, OIC, Extension and Training Cell and co-coordinated by Dr. Ajoy Saha, Senior Scientist, of the Institute.
