ICAR-CIFRI organized awareness program on fish disease surveillance and health management at Purba Medinipur, West Bengal

Disease surveillance provides information on the health status of fish, which is an important step towards control and eradication measures, as well as to support early warning, risk assessment, contingency plans and emergency preparedness program for aquatic animal disease management. ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute has organized one day awareness program on fish disease surveillance and health management under NSPAAD phase II project funded by Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

Under the supervision of Dr. B.K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI, the program was organized at Contai, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, on 1st June 2023. A total of 32 fishers were participated in the program. During the program, Dr. Vikash Kumar ICAR-CIFRI enlighten the gathering on several areas of disease surveillance and health management of fish including aquatic environment vis-à-vis antimicrobial resistance issues, status of fish disease management, sustainable approaches for aquaculture development, etc. Later, team members of NSPAAD phase II project addressed the gathering and motivated the fishers on the fish health and chemotherapeutic management and informed the fishers on negative effect of antibiotics and chemicals indiscriminate use in fishes.

Later the team visited cultured facilities and sensitize the farmers about the importance of water quality and clinical signs on disease development and outbreak.
The pamphlet on both English and Bengali were prepared on disease identification and their possible management measures and distributed among the participants to sensitize the fishers for better management of their fish farm. Dr. Vikash Kumar, Mr. Asim Kumar Jana and research scholars of NSPAAD Phase II project Mr. Souvik Dhar, Mr. Satyanarayan Parida and Mr. Kampan Bisai coordinated the program with great efficiency.
