Roadmap for Students career opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture sector: 13th IFAF

In 13th IFAF ‘student Interface Meet’ was held on 23rd February, 2024. In this occasion, Prof. Manimaran Baskaran, Former VC, TNJFU, Prof. Iddya Karunasagar, Research Advisor, NITTE University, Mangalore and Prof. S.D. Singh, Former ADG, ICAR chaired the session, while Prof. S.K. Udgata, Dean, CoF, Odisha Prof. R.K. Trivedi, WBUAFS, Kolkata and Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Centre, Guwahati acted as panelists.

The session began with opening remarks by Prof. Manimaran Baskaran, Former VC, TNJFU and he urged the students to focus on start-ups and innovations. He stated, this is the era of start-ups, precision farming and students should think about innovations in the field of clean tech, climate tech, precision farming. Prof. Iddya Karunasagar, Research Advisor, NITTE University, talked about the opportunities in fisheries sector. He urged the students to be job providers than the job seekers. He highlighted about the potential funding sources from where students can receive fund their innovations. Prof. S.D. Singh, Former ADG, ICAR, encouraged about the need of will-power and self-confidence among the fisheries students. He talked about job opportunities in fisheries sector in India and abroad.

Prof. S.K. Udgata, Dean, CoF, Odisha gave a detailed presentation on features of ICAR 6th Dean’s committee recommendations with regard to National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 and its adoption in Fisheries Science. Prof. R. K. Trivedi, WBUAFS, Kolkata advocated the need of detailed discussion in NEP and its adoption in Fisheries sector. Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Centre, Guwahati stated that students should be welltrained and well-equipped with advance technologies. Fortunately, Dr. J.K. Jena, DDG, Fisheries Science was also present in the Meet and he responded to all the queries of the students on matters related to job opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture sector, Agricultural research service (ARS) and national education policy etc. From this Student Interface Meet- 13th IFAF, students got the motivation and clear roadmap about the future job and career opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture sector.
