CIFRI organized training programme on ornamental fish for tribal fishermen of Birbhum district, West Benagl

Ornamental fish culture could play an important role in generating income opportunities for the rural tribal fishermen community.

ICAR-CIFRI is continuously and consistently working with its focus on generating an alternative livelihood option by providing alternative income generation through ornamental fish culture. In view of this, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized a three-day training program on “Ornamental fish farming for income generation” for the tribal beneficiaries from Birbhum district of West Bengal under Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) in collaboration with A. K. Dasgupta Centre for Planning and Development, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore during 23rd - 25th April, 2025.

The training program was organised with the aim of imparting appropriate knowledge and building the capacity of the tribal fishermen in different aspects of ornamental fish rearing. A total of 24 tribal male participants from 14 different villages surrounding Santiniketan of Birbhum district participated in this training program. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI inaugurated the training program and interacted with the trainees and motivated them for the ornamental fish culture. He also urged the trainees to take up ornamental fish as a small household business model for income generation. The training program emphasised various aspects of ornamental fish culture, which includes the basic introduction to ornamental fish, fish handling, breeding of ornamental fish, aquarium fabrication through the combination of theory and practical classes, along with field exposure. The trainees were also introduced to the Institute’s facilities such as Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), ornamental hatchery unit and aquarium. The practical sessions mainly covered the topics like breeding set up of ornamental fishes, aquarium fabrication, aquascaping etc. The field trip was organized at Makardaha village and Das Nagar ornamental market in Howrah district to provide a realistic exposure to the trainees.

The three days training program was concluded with certificate distribution to the participants. Trainees expressed their high level of satisfaction with training program. The training program was coordinated by Mr. M.H. Ramteke and Dr. Aparna Roy with the assistance of Sri. Sujit Choudhury, Sri. Manabendra Roy, Dr. Avishek Saha, Mr. Kaushik Mondal, and Dr. Shreya Bhattacharya under the guidance and leadership of Dr. B.K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore.
