Engaging fishers, cooperative societies, and local governance structures through field days and awareness initiatives play crucial roles in responsible management of inland and coastal fisheries resources. ICAR-CIFRI organised a series of “Field Day-Cum-Community Awareness Programmes on Conservation of Indigenous Fish Species of the Pulicat Lake” during June 12-17, 2025, as part of its sustainable fisheries and biodiversity conservation efforts in the lake. The programs were conducted in both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu parts of Pulicat Lake, under the ongoing institutional project on fisheries of Pulicat Lake.
More than 250 fishermen, cooperative society representatives, local leaders, and officials of the Department of Fisheries enthusiastically attended the programmes. The program educated local fishermen, community members, and stakeholders about the need and their role in maintaining Pulicat Lake's unique and indigenous fish species through conservation-friendly fishing. Interactive discussions, sustainable fishing demonstrations, and information on indigenous fish species' importance in livelihoods and ecosystem balance were part of the events.
The programme was conducted by Dr. Dibakar Bhakta, Dr. S. K. Das, Dr. Canciyal Johnson, and Mr. Hansraj Kumar under guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, and close supervision of Dr. S.K. Manna, Head, REF Division of ICAR-CIFRI.
