Sensitization Program on Responsible Fisheries and Coracles Distribution for Bhima River Fisher Folk, Karnataka under SC-SP

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Regional Centre, Bangalore, organized a sensitization program on “Responsible Fisheries for Enhanced Fish Production and Conservation” on 17 September 2025. The program was held under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SC-SP) and was conducted under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, and Dr. L. N. Murthy, Head, Regional Centre, ICAR-CIFRI, Bangalore.

As part of the program, coracles were distributed to five Scheduled Caste fishers, including three women beneficiaries. The program was attended by 50 fishers of Kaburagi district, Karnataka. Dr. V. L. Ramya, Senior Scientist, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of responsible fisheries and conservation of fishery resources. Dr. Vijaykumar, Senior Technical Officer, highlighted the contributions of ICAR-CIFRI towards the enhancement and sustainable management of inland fisheries. The program was graced by Mrs. Mala B. Narayan Rao, President, Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC), as the chief guest. Mr. S. R. Nagaraj, Deputy Director, Department of Fisheries, outlined various schemes available for fishermen, while Mr. Shankar Gondli, Assistant Director of Fisheries, emphasized the role of fisheries in sustaining the livelihoods of riverine fishers.

The program was successfully coordinated by Dr. L. N. Murthy, Dr. V. L. Ramya, Dr. Vijaykumar M. E., Dr. Jesna P. K. and Dr. Santhanakumar V.
