Odisha Fisheries Officials Trained in Disease Diagnostics and Laboratory Skills at CIFRI

The ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore, organized a five days capacity-building programme from 14-18 September,25 for the fishery officials from Odisha with a focus on strengthening their technical knowledge and field-level skills in inland fisheries management. The objective of the programme was to enhance the knowledge and capacity of field-level officers in disease diagnosis and laboratory testing techniques. The training module was specially designed for the officials after assessing their training needs. This was the fifth batch of the officials who took training from the Institute. This training initiative is part of CIFRI’s ongoing commitment to support state departments in strengthening their human resource for sustainable inland fisheries management. Twenty-seven officials, including seven female officials, joined the training cum workshop at CIFRI, Barrackpore.

A total of eleven classroom sessions, two practical sessions and two field exposure visits were conducted to build the capacity of the trainee officials. The training aimed to equip the participants—Assistant Fisheries Officers and other frontline staff—with updated scientific know-how, modern practices, and practical exposure to sustainable management of inland open water resources.

In the classroom session, topics like inland fisheries management, the importance of soil and water quality analysis, common fish diseases, fish disease diagnosis method, fish disease management in enclosure, pen culture, GIS application in fisheries, etc. were covered. A field visit was conducted to East Kolkata Wetland and an on-field practical session was also arranged there. The Hands-on exposure visits and practical demonstrations at CIFRI’s research facilities and field stations enriched the learning process. The programme emphasized laboratory practices and disease diagnosis. In the feedback session, 90% of the trainees expressed that they were highly satisfied and it was very effective and useful training programme for them to enrich their professional career. During the valedictory session; Dr S Samata, HOD,FARI Division, CIFRI congratulated all the participants on their successful training and distributed the training completion certificate. Training Programme was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy and Mr. Mitesh Ramteke with active support from Shri Sujit Chowdhury, Shri Manabendra Roy, Dr. Avishek Saha under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director,CIFRI. p>

The initiative reflects CIFRI’s commitment to support state fisheries departments through knowledge-sharing, skill enhancement, and collaborative capacity building. Strengthening the competencies of Odisha’s fishery officials will help improve inland fisheries governance, ensure better resource utilization and contribute to the sustainable growth of the fisheries sector in the state.
