ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Bangalore, organizes sensitization program on sustainable fisheries in Thenpennai River under SC-SP

The ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Regional Centre, Bangalore, organized a sensitization program on “Sustainable Fisheries and Livelihood Enhancement of Fishers of the Thenpennai River” under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SC-SP) on 25 September 2025. The program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, and Dr. L. N. Murthy, Head, Regional Centre, ICAR-CIFRI, Bangalore. As part of the initiative, coracles were distributed to five Scheduled Caste fishers, aiming to strengthen their fishing practices and livelihood.

The program witnessed the participation of around 50 fishers from Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu. At the outset, Mr. Ganapathy S., Inspector of Fisheries, Tiruvannamalai district, welcomed the gathering and highlighted various fisheries development schemes. Dr. V. L. Ramya, Senior Scientist, briefed the participants about the SC-SP program and emphasized responsible fisheries practices and the conservation of native fishery resources. Dr. Santhana Kumar V., Scientist, stressed the importance of riverine habitat conservation and sustainable management of inland fisheries in the Thenpennai River. Dr. Jesna P. K., Scientist, emphasized the importance of cooperative societies in enhancing fisher livelihoods and concluded the program with a vote of thanks. The event was graced by Mr. Arivazhagan, President, Thenpennai Atru Padugai Fishermen Cooperative Society, along with scientists from ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Centre, Bangalore, and officials from the Department of Fisheries.

The program was successfully coordinated by Dr. L. N. Murthy, Dr. Santhana Kumar V., Dr. V. L. Ramya, Dr. Jesna P. K., and Dr. Sibina Mol S.
