ICAR-CIFRI organized a training programme for the under-graduate students of Cachar College, Silchar, Assam during November 10-14, 2025

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati has organized a 5-day training programme for the under-graduate students of Cachar College, Silchar on ‘Sustainable Aquaculture techniques & Opportunities for entrepreneurship development during Nov. November 10-14, 2025. The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati and Dr. A. Nag, Principal, Cachar College, Silchar, Assam. The programme was coordinated by Dr. P. Das, Dr. S.C.S. Das, Dr. S. Borah, and Dr. N. Sharma, Scientists of the Centre. Dr. N. Debnath, Dr. D. Bhattacharjee, Asst. Professor, Cachar College, Silchar, Assam acted as coordinator from College. A total of 19 (including 14 girls) under-graduate students from Cachar College, Silchar, Assam were attended the 5-days training programme. The inaugural session of the training programme was conducted on Nov. 10, 2025 in which Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC and Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Principal Scientist of the Centre urged the students to take advantages of the training programme for the possible development of entrepreneurship, which exists across the value chain in fisheries and aquaculture sector from fish seed production to value addition and marketing.

During the 5-days training programme, emphasis was given for both theory lectures and practical’s. In the theory lectures different important topics like inland fisheries resources advances in sustainable fish culture techniques, basics on classical and molecular taxonomy of fishes, importance of soil and water quality, fisheries enhancements, pen and cage culture, biofloc fish culture techniques, breeding, culture of indigenous ornamental fishes & aquarium keeping, entrepreneurship opportunities in fisheries, importance of biotic communities, feed and feeding management, inland fisheries data analysis etc. were covered. Practical session on fish taxonomy, assessment of biotic and abiotic variables and soil-quality parameters were also covered.

Students were also taken for the field-exposure visit on 12.11.2025 to the Kalong- Kapili, located in Bogibari, Dimoria Block, Kamrup (M), Assam. The students were aware to different modern fish culture techniques, which can be taken up by them and youth for entrepreneurship development in the sector.

The valedictory session of the training programme was held on 14.11.25. In the session Dr. P. Das, Senior Scientist and co-coordinator presented a brief training report. Student’s participants, as well as faculty members the Cachar College expressed that the training programme contents were very informative and useful for them. The field trip to Kalong-Kapili NGO was very relevant for exposure into modern sustainable aquaculture techniques for the entrepreneurship development. Certificates were distributed among the student’s participants by Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati along with the Scientific and technical staffs of the centre. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks.
