Workshop on Stress-free fish transportation system organized by ICAR-CIFRI at Agartala

ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura organized a-day-long workshop on “Stress-free fish transportation system: Stakeholder consultation-cum-demonstration” in the conference hall, Directorate of Fisheries, P. N. Complex, Agartala on November 19, 2025. The main objective of the workshop was to sensitized eco-friendly technologies developed by ICAR-CIFRI for safe and hassle-free fish transportation for livelihood improvement among the stakeholders.

A unique sedative and anesthetic herbal product used for fish handling and transportation ‘CIFRI Fish Tanavhari’ developed by ICAR-CIFRI under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, which is an effective solution without any side effect on fish health with quick recovery to normal condition was also demonstrated in the workshop. The programme was attended by 105 people including Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI, academician from College of Fisheries, CAU, Agartala, Department of Fisheries Officials, hatchery owners, live fish and seed transporters covering all the eight districts of Tripura including media personnel. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. B. K. Das, ARS, Director, ICAR-CIFRI in presence of Shri. S. Das, IAS, Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura and the departmental officials. In the session, Dr. S. C. S. Das. Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Centre, Guwahati welcomed the participants and briefed about the workshop. In the technical session, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, briefed about the Institutes work and different innovative farmer friendly products developed by the Institutes over the past few years stressing mainly on ‘CIFRI Fish Tanavhari’. He gave a comprehensive presentation on stress free transportation system. He also stated that the workshop is a response to the questions raised by farmers at the Governor conclave, held in Guwahati earlier this year and similar type of workshop was held in Guwahati on 17th October, 2025 with great response from stakeholders of Assam.

ICAR-CIFRI will be organizing similar type workshop to other states of the country to promote the products. Dr. H. Chowdhury, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore briefed about the background of innovating ‘CIFRI Fish Tanavhari’ with a live demonstration carried by him, Dr. S. C. S. Das and the officials from Glacus Pvt. Ltd. Kolkata. The farmers and the officials of the department Shri. S. Islam, MD, Glacus Pvt. Ltd. Kolkata, and his team also explained the market performance of the product. The farmers were stakeholders were interacted with the Scientists and Officials of Glacus Pvt. Ltd. Kolkata. Shri S. Das, IAS, Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura; Shri. A. Debbarma, Joint Director of Fisheries; Dr. H. Priyadarshi, Associate Professor, College of Fisheries, Agartala; Shri S. Debbarma, FDO; Shri H. Sarkar, Supdt. of Fisheries; Fisheries Officials; Farmers; Hatchery owners; Fish transporters and sellers across the state appreciated ICAR-CIFRI for developing the herbal product.

The product will address the problems of fish mortality with oxygen plastic bags during transportation of live fishes for many stakeholders in the aquaculture sector. On the occasion, a total of 120 no. (100ml per bottle) of ‘CIFRI Fish Tanavhari’ were distributed among stakeholders (31 no. to farmers; 81 no. to government officials. The programme was ended with a formal vote of thanks.
