ICAR-CIFRI organized a training programme on ‘Sustainable Beel Fisheries Development’ for officials of Department of Fisheries, Assam

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with Fishery Department, Government of Assam organized a 3-days training programme for Fisheries Officers of the state on ‘Sustainable Beel Fisheries Development’ under Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded ‘Sustainable Wetlands and Integrated Fisheries Transformation’ (SWIFT) Project during November 18-20, 2025. The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Shri Gauri Sankar Das, ACS, Director of Fisheries, Assam; Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati and Dr. R.C. Barman, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries, Assam. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI; Mr. Khanindra Bhuyan and Mr. Dibya Jyoti Dev Nath, Fishery Development Officers. A total of 30 fisheries officers (including 8 lady officers) attended the training programme.
The inaugural session of the training programme was conducted on November 18, 2025 in which Dr. Kavyashree Mahanta, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Assam, Fishery Department was the chief guest. She urged the officials to take full advantage of the training program in enhancing their knowledge and skills and urged the officials to work passionately for the development of fisheries sector of the state. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI in his address emphasized on the need for co-management approaches for sustainable beel fisheries development. Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Guwahati Centre, Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Principal Scientist of the Centre and Dr. R.C. Barman, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries urged the officials to interact with the resource persons and also share their experience.
During the 3-days training programme, emphasis was given on sound and holistic management of beel fisheries. Important topics like management protocols for beel fisheries, macrophyte control, fish disease management, environment monitoring, fish seed rearing, community based fisheries management, engineering aspects, fish in human nutrition were covered. The valedictory session of the training programme was held on 20th November, 2025. In the valedictory session Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist and Coordinator of the training program presented a brief training report. Shri Gauri Sankar Das, ACS, Director of Fisheries, Assam was the chief guest in the valedictory session. He emphasized that there is scope for tremendous development in fisheries sector of the state and particularly in beel fisheries and all the officials should work cohesively and whole-heartedly. Fisheries officials of the state expressed their satisfaction on the training program.
