Quinquennial Review Team Meeting held at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore

The Quinquennial Review Team (QRT) Meeting for the period 2018–2023 commenced on 28- 29 November 2025. The meeting was chaired by Hon’ble Dr. W. S. Lakra, Former VC and Director,,CIFE and esteemed Members of QRT were Dr. W. Viswanath, Dr. V. Kripa, Dr. S. M. Shivaprakash, Dr. H. S. Murthy and Dr. H. K. Vardia . The Chairman started the meeting with encouraging remarks, noting the institute’s steady advancement and the impressive rise in scientific output over the review period. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, formally welcomed the QRT and highlighted key achievements and recent developmental strides. This was followed by the introductory address of the Hon’ble Chairman, Dr. W. S. Lakra, who expressed appreciation for the institute’s growing national relevance, improved publication record, and strengthened multidisciplinary research culture.

After a brief tea break, the technical session began with the presentation of the Action Taken Report by Dr. Aparna Roy, Member Secretary, QRT. The Chairman and Members commended the clarity of the report and the institute’s effective implementation of previous recommendations. This was followed by the Director’s comprehensive presentation on overall research activities, which drew warm appreciation from the QRT Members for the substantial increase in publications, enhanced outreach, and the clear alignment of research programmes with national priorities in fisheries and aquatic resource management.

The subsequent sessions comprised presentations from all the research divisions of ICAR-CIFRI. The Heads of Divisions, Dr. S. Samanta, Dr. S. K. Manna, Dr. R. K. Manna, Dr. A. Muzaddadi, Dr. A. Sinha and Dr. Arun Pandit spoke about their works. The QRT acknowledged the collective progress across divisions and noted the strengthening of scientific methodologies, the expanded use of field-based research, and the growing emphasis on data-driven approaches. The day concluded with encouraging observations from the QRT, who praised the institute’s overall scientific growth, institutional discipline, and emerging leadership in inland fisheries research. p>

The second day of the meeting, began with a visit to the laboratories and interactions with scientists. The QRT Members expressed satisfaction with the institute’s well-equipped facilities, advanced analytical instruments, and the professionalism of the research staff. They noted that the improved research environment will continue to support high-quality scientific output and innovation.

In the afternoon session, QRT interacted with the CAO and CF& AO of the Institute. After that, the Director and QRT members addressed the gathering, reflecting on the institute’s progress and future directions. The QRT Members reiterated their appreciation for the breadth and depth of research being undertaken and encouraged the institute to continue expanding collaborations, enhancing technology dissemination, and strengthening interdisciplinary initiatives.

The meeting concluded with the Hon’ble Chairman’s final remarks, wherein he praised the dedication of the scientists, the steady improvement in research quality, and the institute’s growing contribution to national fisheries development. A formal Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Aparna Roy, Member Secretary, QRT, marking the successful conclusion of the two-day review.
